8000 Dogs Expected at Celtic Classic Dog Show

York, PA - The York Expo Center will be packed with dogs and their owners from all over the country to participate in the 4th annual Celtic Classic Dog Show, which will feature winners in best in breed, best in group, and best in show.   Members of the York, Lancaster and Delaware County Kennel Clubs organize and host this annual event, and are anticipating almost 8000 dogs to compete for top prizes.  The event will be held from Wednesday, March 16, to Sunday, March 20, in the Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center at 334 Carlisle Ave. in West Manchester Township. Washington, DC  - When your’ Veterinarian treats your pet with medication it is not the same as pet owners giving their animal some of their own medicine. "Administration of human medications should only occur with the recommendation and supervision of a veterinarian," Dr. Carolynn MacAllister, an Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension veterinarian, said in a university news release. Accidental pet poisoning is a common problem when pet owners intentionally give medication in an attempt to make their pet feel better. Pet poisoning also happens inadvertently when an animal has access to medications that are in their environment. If you have pets you should pet-proof your home just as you would if there were small children in the home," she advised. Georgetown, TX - Two brave dogs of rural Georgetown deserve commendation and praise for the help they provide in bringing closure to the families of missing soldiers in Iraq.  Major and Ana are Belgian Malinois, trained to search for the bodies of fallen soldiers for the U.S. military.  For most of the past three years, these dogs braved sandstorms and the occasional threat of sniper fire overseas with their trainer, Joe Worsham, one of three handlers of human remains detection dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Irvine, CA - Pets get Alzheimer’s disease just like humans do but the good news is that moderate exercise is not only great for your pet’s body but their brain as well. By taking dog or cat for a walk each day you would be protecting your pet and you from Alzheimer’s according to Carl Cottman, director of Alzheimer's Disease Research at the University of California-Irvine. Cottman says regular moderate exercise turns out to be healthy for our heads as well as our hearts. And the same goes for our dogs. Alzheimer’s disease is referred to as cognitive dysfunction also known as CD. It is a common condition in humans and so it seems, also in pets. Atlanta, GA - New data was just released that shows that over 55 percent of pets in the United States are 30 percent above normal weight or obese. This means that one fifth of all dogs and cats in the U.S. are now considered overweight or obese according to a study conducted by the Association for pet Obesity along with Mars Inc’s, Banfield Pet Hospital. Many problems can occur in obese pets just like in humans such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure. The obvious cause of this epidemic is the routine overfeeding of pets and the lack of exercise.  According to the research, those pets that are feed less over their lifetime tend to live significantly longer and healthier lives. Missing Cat Rescued From Burned Building 4 Days Later

Brooklyn, NY - It was a heroic day for the Brooklyn Firefighters who were able to rescue the family cat that went missing during a deadly fire that broke out last Saturday.  The cat, properly named Fatty Girl for her slightly being overweight, was found and re-joined with her grateful family. The blazing fire consumed the sixth floor of the Flatbush building where the Gilette family lived, nearly costing them their lives.  Chifton Gilette, Fatty Girl's owner, her husband, three of their five cats, and their dog managed to escape the burning building, but two cats got left behind.  The fire also left 47 families homeless and killed 62 year-old retiree Mary Feagin. Distraught owner, Chifton, attended a tenant's meeting three days after the fire, in the hopes of getting someone to listen.  She tearfully begged Brooklyn Borough Commander Chief, Jim Leonard, to have someone go back and look for Fatty girl and her other missing cat. Orange, CT - In an annual effort to raise awareness of animal shelters and the many homeless pets that are available for adoption, popular ABC daytime television talk show, "The View", hosts their Mutt Show in the hopes of bringing new lives and new homes to these loving animals.  Franco, a four-year old dog from Orange, was one of the six lucky dogs chosen to be a celebrity for a day on the talk show.
