Software Teaches Children to Interact Safely With Dogs

Z2RWS6CFMMEC According to study researcher David Schwebel, children make up the majority of the five million dog bite victims in the United States each year.  Because of this disturbing statistic, the nonprofit organization, The Blue Dog Trust, developed an interactive computer game called "The Blue Dog."  The purpose of the software is to teach children how to safely interact with dogs and to recognize when it may not be a good time to approach them, hopefully lessening the possibility of future dog bites in children. Does the computer game work?  Does it really teach children to safely interact with dogs?  The results of a study to determine just that says the answer is "sort of".  Schwebel and his colleagues watched 76 children, ages 3 to 5, as they completed three different tasks, all of which were meant to determine if the children understood when it was okay and not okay to ...

Will Vets Still be Able to Use Antibiotics to Treat Your Pet?

In order to help preserve the effectiveness of certain antibiotics, cephalosporins, the FDA had to make a decision regarding their use in livestock.  Cephalosporins are antibiotics used to treat so many things in dogs and cats, such as kennel cough and bites from snakes for example, and are also the least expensive antibiotic treatment you can get at your vets office.  After careful consideration, the FDA ruled yesterday that their use is to be limited in livestock, meanwhile preserving their use for cats and dogs when treatment is necessary. Since these antibiotics are no longer able to be used in livestock, their effectiveness at treating ailments in your pets should remain intact.  The problem is that with widespread use, the drug starts to lose its effectiveness, creating a drug resistant strain of the bacteria the antibiotic is supposed to treat. What does this mean for your pet?  It means that your veterinarian ...

Create a Place to Sleep When creating a place for your outdoor cat to sleep during the cold winter days and nights, make it just big enough for the cat, not allowing space for other outside critters to move in.  You'll want to put a warm blanket in the space, preferably under a deck, porch, or other sheltered area.  One area we recommend is near a dryer vent, allowing for warm air to collect in the cat's shelter.  If you have multiple areas where you ...
