Top 5 Dog Breeds for Running

1
dog breeds for running

It is always more fun to have company on a run. Particularly company that doesn’t need to be talked to if you don’t feel like it. Dogs can make fantastic jogging buddies. They welcome the exercise and some breeds will go for ten or more miles without flagging. You do need to be aware of the weather conditions when running with your dog though. Dogs (and people) can get heat stroke when running in hot weather. Because your dog wants to please you, he is more likely to push himself past the point where he needs to take a break. It is important not to overdo it in hot weather, particularly with a long or medium-coated animal. Watch for excessive drooling, heavy panting, any signs of disorientation, or changes in gum color. Try to plan summer runs for early in the morning or evenings when the temperature has dropped some. Use ...

Mike Tyson’s Ex Girlfriend Cooked and Ate His Pigeon

mike tyson

Mike Tyson has eaten ear before (at the expense of Evander Holyfield) but at least he’s never eat pigeon. His ex-girlfriend, on the other hand, is a different story. Tyson’s love affair with pigeons is nothing new (in fact, he’s admitted that his first ever fight was as a child, when he fought a “bigger” kid who had pulled the head off of one of Tyson’s beloved birds. In 2011 he had a pigeon racing reality show. And Adult Swim just announced that Tyson will team up with a sidekick pigeon in a new cartoon series. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise to his ex-girlfriend that Tyson surrounds himself with pigeons. “They’re so much like people,” Tyson once said. But in a recent interview with CBS New York’s WFAN, Tyson admitted that one of his ex-girlfriends became incensed with this pigeon obsession. “I don’t know why you’re flying those damn birds,” he remembers ...

Prosthetic Limbs for Animals: How Does it Work?

prosthetic limbs

While many pets can manage remarkably well with only three limbs, losing more than one limb tends to pose a much more significant problem. In the past, the only solution was often euthanization. Companies like Orthopets are changing that by providing a variety of different prosthetic solutions for animals that have lost limbs, flippers, tails, and even beaks. The patients range from dogs and cats to bald eagles and elephants. Although the main recipients are cats and dogs, rehabilitation groups and aquariums have also used prosthetics to improve the quality of life of their charges. Crafting a prosthetic limb for an animal can be a difficult process. Unlike, people they cannot indicate if the limb is comfortable and working well. Most animals will put up with far more pain than a person would in order to get things done but the goal is to provide a humane solution, not one that ...

Dog Psychology: Is It Real?

dog psychology

Dog psychology is a relatively new field that has many supporters and just as many who feel it is a fraud. The American Psychological Association (APA) defines psychology as the study of the mind and behavior. The study and practise of animal behavior is not that different. Animal behaviorists are considered a fairly reputable source of information to consult when you are having difficulty with your dog. Are dog psychologists just animal behaviorists going under a different name? When people think of psychologists they tend to think of someone who listens to a person’s troubles and helps them find ways to handle them. Obviously dogs don’t curl up on the couch and pour their hearts out to a psychologist. But, paying attention to how a dog is behaving and knowing about their previous experiences through their owner can certainly shed light on how to solve issues. Separation anxiety is a serious problem ...

Colorado Adopts Rescue Animals as State Pets

rescue animals

Rescue dogs (and cats) are wagging their tails proudly today as a new bill just passed in their honor. As of Monday May 13, 2013 Colorado’s State pet is the animals of shelters and rescues. The bill was introduced by young students of the Peakview School in Walsenburg, Colorado. Elementary and Middle school students were encouraged to take part in the legislative process of passing a bill. And these kids didn’t just learn about the process from their classroom, they participated in the courtroom, as well. During the discussion regarding the bill dogs barked, leashes tangled, and children were dressed as dalmations. DenverPost.com shows a picture of Sen. Andy Kerr, D-Lakewood speaking to the Senate with his black lab and son by his side. His son is dressed as a dalmation, complete with a polka dot shirt and black circles drawn on his face. Also, in the courtroom were other students. A ...

Puppy Lemon Laws: A Way to be Held Accountable

puppy lemon laws

Illinois is getting set to become the latest state to enact a puppy lemon law. The bill has passed the Senate with a vote of 31-18 in favor and is now moving on to the House. If successful, it will join a list of twenty other states that have puppy lemon laws in place. Although some feel the Illinois bill does not go far enough – it applies only to pets purchased through pet stores and excludes shelters and hobby breeders – it is undeniably a move in the right direction. Puppy lemon laws are meant to protect purchasers who unknowingly buy an animal that is ill or suffers from a congenital or genetic defect that makes it unable to live a normal life. They vary widely in strength with some being more inclusive than others. Illinois is offering protection for 21 days from purchase against illness, providing lots of room ...

Ag-Gag Laws Almost Lead to a Prosecution in Utah

ag-gag laws

First Ag-Gag Prosecution Almost Comes to Fruition in Utah Amy Meyer was driving by the Dale Smith Meatpacking Company slaughterhouse in Utah when she decided to pull over and videotape what she saw: piles or horns littered across the property, cows being dragged across the grounds, one cow in particularly who appeared sick or injured being hauled off in a tractor “as though she were nothing more than rubble,” Meyer told the online paper Green is the New Red. Meyer’s videotaping did not go over well with the slaughterhouse manager, Darrel H. Smith, the town mayor, who told her to stop. She made it clear that she was not on his property, and had every right to record anything she wanted. At least that’s what she thought. However, later on Meyer learned that she was going to be prosecuted under Utah’s new law (a law many people refer to as an “ag-gag law”) which ...

Animal Chiropractors: What to Know

animal chiropractor

Although there has been anecdotal evidence of chiropractic therapy being used on animals for centuries, there was no formal organization or training available until the mid-1980s. Today there are hundreds of licensed animal chiropractors in almost every state of the USA. They practise on everything from dogs and cats to exotic animals in zoos. This mirrors a growing interest in alternative therapies in veterinary medicine. Homeopathic medications, acupuncture, and massage therapy have all seen huge growth in the last two decades. The public’s interest in new methodologies and more natural treatment methods for the pets have led them down the same paths as human medicine. It has also seen sharp divisions arise in the pet industry regarding vaccinations and traditional treatment methods for handling parasites. Things have changed from when everyone vaccinated their pets every year to complex instructions that vary widely from vet to vet. Some owners have eschewed vaccinations altogether ...
