Lion Meat Tacos – Are You Ready To Eat The King of the Jungle?

0

Just a month ago, it was reported that Taco Fusion, in Florida, put a $35 meat taco on its menu. Thirty-five bucks for a little Mexican dish is a pretty hefty price, but not necessarily newsworthy. That is, of course, until you discover that the meat inside that taco comes from the king of the jungle. Public outrage surrounding this new addition forced Taco Fusion to pull the mighty taco from its menu, but that doesn’t mean that lion meat doesn’t exist in an American’s diet. Lion meat is just one of many exotic  (and legal) meats that people across the country enjoy. The U.S. Endangered Species Act does not protect African lions, currently, making them the only big cat species not protected. That means that the trading and selling of lion meat in the U.S. isn’t legal, even if many people find it offensive. In Illinois, Representative Luis Arroyo is trying ...

Unique Animal Defenses

animal defenses

In the wild, animals are in a constant battle to eat and avoid being eaten. It is often referred to as the predator-prey arms race because each time one develops a new adaptation, the other has to work to overcome it. Most people are familiar with poisonous animals such as snakes and poison dart frogs. Obviously the claws and teeth of many animals also provide a formidable defense. In some cases, such as the elephant, sheer size, can work pretty well too; but some species have developed some very unique ways of outsmarting their prey and their predators. The slow loris is one of the few mammals to use poison. It has glands on its elbows that contain a toxin which often causes anaphylactic shock in those that ingest it or otherwise get it into their bloodstream. They rub the secretions from this gland on their young to deter would be ...

Thailand’s Illegal Dog Meat Smuggling

dog meat smuggling

One million dogs are eaten each year in Vietnam, reports CNN. Due to the strong demand for dog meat, business is rising for dog smugglers - hence a market for dog meat smuggling. Stray dogs and pets are captured in Thailand and traded for $60 each in Vietnam. The life of a loving and furry companion ends as the main dish in a restaurant. One reason the trade is increasing is that dogs are friendly and easy to catch. They are rounded up in the streets and stolen out of gardens. Dog traders have no respect for the animal. Dogs are tossed into cages like apples into a fruit bowl. They are packed twenty to a wire cage, and piled on top of each other.  Trucks transport hundreds of dogs stuffed into tight spaces with no room, little air, and no thought for their comfort, health, or mental state. The journey ...

Does Your Pet Deserve a Vacation Too?

vacation

We all know the benefits we get from a relaxing vacation. These breaks can, however, come with some stress if we are leaving our pets at home. It doesn’t matter if you know they are in safe hands, you’ll still worry over how they are doing. How do you think they feel about it? Well, you just have to experience of the exuberant joy of a welcome-home from your dog or the nonchalant ‘I’m ignoring you because you left me alone’ attitude from your cat to know that they actually missed you too. Why take a pet on vacation? Most pet lovers don’t see their pets as just animals; they are valued and loved members of a family unit. There is no reason why you can’t take them on vacation with you. They’ll love going out of routine and spending more time with you. It can actually help them relax too. This won’t work with ...

Do Fish Feel Pain?

fish

As a vegetarian, I’m often confronted with this: “Ah, but you eat fish, right?” The answer is no (at least currently), but my questioner’s argument is this: fish aren’t really animals. They don’t feel pain. So even a vegetarian can eat them. Well, for starters, fish are animals (they’re certainly not plants or fungi), but the idea that fish do (or don’t) feel pain isn’t as obvious a conclusion to come to. For years and years it’s been argued that fish don’t feel pain, making it okay for animal lovers and vegetarians to eat this type of animal without overwhelming remorse. But for as long as we believed that fish don’t feel pain, there’ve been studies trying to prove that belief wrong. What exactly is pain? Believers of the fish-feel-pain argument often reference the way a fish will struggle when hooked, or how a lobster will cringe as it’s dropped into boiling water. To ...

How Can I Tell If My Dog Has Lyme Disease?

lyme disease

While there are many diseases humans can get that dogs can’t get (and vice versa), Lyme disease is not one of them. Ticks pose as much a risk to our pets as they do to us. Luckily, our dogs at least can benefit from flea and tick preventative care. But what if your dog isn’t treated by this medicine, or it wasn’t applied correctly? A dog’s body is a playground for ticks, which take advantage of all that hair to cling onto. While you may not roll in the ground all that often, your dog likely does, making him extremely vulnerable to ticks. Although not every tick bite means Lyme disease, it does increase the risk. How can you tell if your dog has Lyme disease? Check out the list below: Lameness: Dogs that suffer from Lyme disease often suffer from recurrent lameness of limbs. This is due to an inflammation ...

Endangered Whale Dog Treats Sold In Japan

dog treats

Pampered pets are seen everywhere in the US. Clothes, spas, day care, and high end pet foods are the norm for pet parents in the states. Similar to our pet loving nature, Japan also has a culture of spoiling their four legged friends. In fact, the market for high end pet supplies has recently become controversial. A Japanese firm introduced a new snack for sale on its website with an interesting new ingredient. The newest in a line of exotic pet foods is a jerky made of whale fin. But not just any whale – the North Atlantic Fin Whale. These animals are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Commercial whaling itself was banned internationally in 1986. Japan imports whale for human consumption through an Iceland whaling company. The company continues to hunt whales despite the international ban on commercial whaling. The AWI reports, Icelanders ...

Top 5 Dog Friendly Beaches in the US: 2013

dog friendly beaches

When the hot weather hits, who doesn’t want to hit the beach? If your dog loves the water, he’ll love the beach the same way that you do. Many beaches do not allow pets but there are some dog friendly beaches that are open to dogs. Remember that if the beach is your destination, like dog parks there are likely to be many other owners and their pets there. If your dog does not like other animals, this probably isn’t his idea of a good time. Because there are many other animals frequenting the area, it can also be high in the disease risk department. If you have an unvaccinated puppy or an ill dog with a compromised immune system, this is not the right place for you to go together. Remember to always be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your dog. The following beaches welcome dogs 1. San ...
