White Plains, NY - In this tough economy, some pet owners are abandoning their pets because they can no longer afford to feed them. "I was watching a story on the news about how the bad economy was putting a strain on pet owners and how so many pets were being abandoned or dropped off at shelters because people could no longer afford to keep them," she said. "That really stuck with me. I started doing some research and found out that there was no pet food pantry in Westchester. Some humane societies and ...

Dogs Deserve Better is a national non-profit agency focused on taking care of abused and abandoned dogs, and freeing them from chains and penned environments.  "There are 15 acres where we will build a state-of-the-art dog caretaking facility and train these neglected, unsocialized dogs to live inside as part of ...

Zebrafish Hold Key To Fighting Heart Disease

Great Britain - A popular tropical fish normally found pet aquariums may hold the key to the future of preventing heart disease. Medical researchers in the U.K. have discovered that the zebrafish possesses a unique ability to regenerate damaged heart muscles, recovering as much as twenty percent within a week of a cardiac injury. A protein molecule called thymosine beta-4, which is found in zebrafish, could become the basis of a new heart-repair drug. "The protein seems to control the growth of the epicardium membrane, which surrounds the heart, so that it triggers the formation of new cardiac tissue and blood vessels, " said Professor Paul Riley of the Institute of Child Health, University College London. "We hope to find similar molecules or drug-like compounds that might be able to stimulate these cells further. We'd really like to translate this to humans. It's an example to resident stem-cell repair," Professor Riley ...

Stray Cat Barely Alive when Rescued From the Cold

Duluth, MN - It was a grim and lonely few weeks outside in the cold, snow, and ice for stray cat, later named Aslan, before a local couple realized the need to take action.  After seeing the cat outside a few times, it was apparent that the cat was desperately in need of a warm and loving environment.  Duluth Animal Shelter became that safe haven for Aslan, where he was nurtured back to good health. As a general rule of thumb, if it's too cold for you to go outside without a jacket, it's too cold to leave your pets outside, especially cats, who are prone to frostbite.  Animal control officer, Carrie Lane, described the cat upon arrival to the animal shelter as "...emaciated, its paws were frostbitten, and its ears were chewed by ear mites.  One of its ear tips had fallen off from the frostbite, and rigor mortis was beginning to set in," ...

New Federal Law Infuriates Pet Snake Owners

Vero Beach, FL - After a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey suggested that the Burmese python and eight other species of constrictor snakes as injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act, the Fish and Wildlife Service has taken steps to ban the importation as well as distribution of these snakes across states lines. Violators would be subject to penalties of six months in prison and $5,000 fine. At risk is the region in South Florida, including the Everglades, where it is believed that thousands of Burmese pythons and the other constrictors are putting already-imperiled species at greater risk. There are no distinct predators for these snakes, and they have easily adapted to the environment where food is plentiful and the climate is perfect. From the U.S.G.S assessment - "The nine include the world’s four largest snake species (Green Anaconda, Eunectes murinus; Indian or Burmese Python, Python molurus; Northern African ...

Mini Pigs Are Hugely Popular

Framingham, MA - The Franceskin family of Framingham, Massachusetts fell in love with love with little pigs or "teacup pigs," as they are known in the profession, when they appeared on “The Late Show with Jay Leno”. The miniature kind of swine may be new to the MetroWest area and the state, but breeder Tammy Carlson, who runs a pig farm outside San Diego, said the cute companion animal is becoming an increasingly popular American house pet. "There's a huge demand," said Carlson, who runs PixiePigs.com. "I have a hard time even keeping up with my e-mails. I get so many inquiries about them, and we have a lot of visitors come out and see the pigs." The Franceskins are her first customers in Massachusetts. However, local Animal Control officer Katherine MacKenzie wasn’t convinced that the Franceskins could handle a pig. "This is a novelty pet," MacKenzie said. "This is something that ...
