FDA Issues Warning About Self-Medicating Pets
Washington, DC - When your’ Veterinarian treats your pet with medication it is not the same as pet owners giving their animal some of their own medicine. "Administration of human medications should only occur with the recommendation and supervision of a veterinarian," Dr. Carolynn MacAllister, an Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension veterinarian, said in a university news release. Accidental pet poisoning is a common problem when pet owners intentionally give medication in an attempt to make their pet feel better. Pet poisoning also happens inadvertently when an animal has access to medications that are in their environment. If you have pets you should pet-proof your home just as you would if there were small children in the home," she advised. "One regular strength tablet of acetaminophen may cause damage to a cat's red blood cells, which limits their ability to carry oxygen. In dogs, acetaminophen can lead to liver problems, and if ...
Belgian Malinois Brings Closure to Soldiers Families
Georgetown, TX - Two brave dogs of rural Georgetown deserve commendation and praise for the help they provide in bringing closure to the families of missing soldiers in Iraq. Major and Ana are Belgian Malinois, trained to search for the bodies of fallen soldiers for the U.S. military. For most of the past three years, these dogs braved sandstorms and the occasional threat of sniper fire overseas with their trainer, Joe Worsham, one of three handlers of human remains detection dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2008, Worsham was chosen by the Florida-based American K-9 Detection Services to head to Iraq. "I thought it would be interesting," he said. "I thought there was an opportunity there to get paid while I did something that I had a strong passion for. It's about bringing an individual home that has paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms." When a mission began, Worsham, Major, and Ana headed out with a platoon, usually under ...
Study Reveals Exercise Reduces Risk of Alzheimer’s in Pets
Irvine, CA - Pets get Alzheimer’s disease just like humans do but the good news is that moderate exercise is not only great for your pet’s body but their brain as well. By taking dog or cat for a walk each day you would be protecting your pet and you from Alzheimer’s according to Carl Cottman, director of Alzheimer's Disease Research at the University of California-Irvine. Cottman says regular moderate exercise turns out to be healthy for our heads as well as our hearts. And the same goes for our dogs. Alzheimer’s disease is referred to as cognitive dysfunction also known as CD. It is a common condition in humans and so it seems, also in pets. "It's always been there," says veterinary behaviorist Gary Landsberg of Thornhill, Ontario, director of veterinary affairs at Cancog Technologies. "Our pets are living longer, and we're learning much more about identifying cognitive dysfunction." Landsberg is ...

Don’t Get Skunked This Spring
Allentown, PA - Being the victim in a skunk spray situation is among the worst of nightmares. Not only is the smell absolutely awful, but the substance is oily and seems to repel water. In fact, water actually intensifies the smell. Most people are at a loss for what to do to remove the smell from the family dog. The first thing many think to do is to put poor scruffy in the bathtub, run the water full blast, and lather him with tomato juice...Wrong, wrong, and wrong! Other research provides options to remove the skunk smell from the dog, however nothing is guaranteed. Veterinarian, Erin Troy, says, "There are a lot of formulations out there and in my experience none of them are a cure-all but most of them help." One homemade mixture consists of 1 Quart Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 Cup Baking Soda, and 1 to 2 Teaspoons of liquid soap. Do not soak your dog ...
