5 Ways to Challenge Your Dog’s Mind

dog

Anyone who is a parent knows that a tired kid is a well-behaved kid. The same goes for dogs. Dogs who are mentally and physically tired are less likely to be destructive, unruly and rambunctious. But it’s not just about running your dog for 2 hours each day. Physical exhaustion is one thing. Mental exhaustion is something entirely different. Trainers will often claim that 15 minutes of intense training is as exhausting, if not more, than an hour of physical play. And, when you train your dog, you’re teaching him a new activity under a controlled environment, which helps encourage the behavior you want your dog to model. Here are 5 ways to challenge your dog’s mind to not only fight boredom, but to help your dog become the best he can be. New tricks for old and young dogs. Throw out that notion that you can’t teach an old dog new ...

Breed Basics: Boston Terrier

boston terrier

The Boston Terrier is the American gentleman of toy breeds. He is one of the few purebreds developed in the United States. Bred down from large pit-fighting breeds, it is difficult to imagine today’s Boston Terrier having ever participated in such an activity. The Boston Terrier is an active, little dog that suits families of all types. Traits This is a short coated breed that requires little grooming. They are generally no more than 25 pounds and no less than 10 pounds. The original Boston Terriers in the breed’s beginnings were up to forty four pounds. The coat is brindle and white, black and white or seal and white with brindle and white being preferable. The white is an integral part of the dog’s appearance and should be present. Although they are small enough to be treated as a lap dog, they are a small dog that thinks he’s big. Training As with all small dogs, housebreaking can be difficult. ...

Sacred White Moose Killed by Hunters in Nova Scotia

white moose

Facebook gets a lot of folks into trouble with the law, their bosses, parents … But a couple of stoked hunters up in Canada never thought they’d get the backlash headed their way when they posted a photo on Facebook celebrating their latest kill. Their latest kill just happened to be a white moose that had wandered the woods near Cape Breton, Novia Scotia for years. The moose, which was either albino or leucistic (lacking in the pigment melanin) was considered sacred among the native Mi’kmaq people. White animals (including bison) are on par with spiritual beings. “A moose like that represents the highest quality of a Native person,” said Emmett Peters, a Mi’kmaq ELder. “... it reminds me of integrity, courage, everything great in a leader.” The hunters had no idea that this moose was sacred, and didn’t think twice to haul its dead body, on their truck, into the center of ...

5 Reasons Why Your Dog Should Not Sleep With You

dog sleeping in bed

I’ll preface this by saying I’m guilty as charged – or at least I was guilty of letting my dog sleep with me. I’m reformed. Healed. Saw the error of my ways, and I’m here to help you all do the same. Do I judge you for letting your dog sleep with you in bed? No, no judgment here. I’ve been there. Done that. I’m simply here to help you see why this seemingly innocent act can lead to bigger issues down the road. Here are 5 reasons why your dog should not sleep with you. Blurring the lines – Dogs may be a man’s best friend, but man is a dog’s dominant master. It has to be that way. If we didn’t take on the dominant role, then we’d be the ones with collars around our necks, being told to “Go Make” and “Stay.” Okay, so it might not get to ...

The Dangers of Backyard Zoos

zoos

The arm of a woman who works at the Garold Wayne Interactive Zoological Park in Oklahoma was nearly torn from the woman’s body last week following a mauling during a seemingly routine Saturday morning. The woman, Kelci Saffery, 27, survived the ordeal and vows to return to work after her full recovery. She also blames none other than herself for the mishap that nearly took her arm: “On Oct. 5, I broke protocol and stuck my hand in a cat cage instead of using the stick provided,” she wrote in a public statement. “The cat let go and pushed my arm back through the cage … this tiger was not aggressive toward me.” The problem with backyard zoos Whether you’re an employee of a backyard zoo or an internationally known zoo housed in San Diego, you should know better than to stick your hand inside a tiger cage. Thus, for Saffery to admit her ...

Breed Basics: Pugs

The Pug is known for his clownish demeanour and is a natural jester. Although his origins are not clear, pugs were kept in many parts of Asia as pets by royalty and monks. They are an old breed with their likeness appearing in lots of old artworks. They are active and lively, little dogs that make fabulous family pets. Traits The typical pug weighs between 10 and 20 pounds but is much sturdier than most toy breeds. He is active and fun loving but prone to being lazy and overeating if indulged. Because their energy needs are relatively easy to meet and they are inactive indoors, they are ideal dogs for apartment dwellers. Although they can be stubborn and melodramatic, pugs are quite trainable. They come in various shades of fawn and black. The short nose and large eyes are typical of the breed and do require some special care. Training The pug is ...

Does Your Pet Really Need Flea/Tick Medicine All Year Long?

medicine

During the summer my scarves, coats and boots are put away in storage, since they do me no good when the thermometer hits 90. In the winter, you won’t see me in my sandals, although I’d like to have the option. We humans have our seasonal habits and rituals based on temperature. It makes sense then that dogs and cats follow suit, particularly in regards to their flea and tick medicine. Each fall many a pet owner begins to question whether they really need to give their cat or dog flea/tick medicine throughout the winter. In the coldest months birds fly south, bears hibernate, and every living thing that once flourished outdoors is either dead, frozen, or in hiding. Doesn’t that include fleas and ticks? Why everyone recommends year-round This article, of course, is all but irrelevant for folks who live in warmer climates. They always need flea and tick medicine. But for ...

Animal Shelter Drop Boxes: Are They Safe?

animal shelter

Animal lovers are distraught over drop boxes in use at the Rutherford County Animal Shelter but officials say it may be the best option available. Reports have surfaced about drop boxes being used by the shelter for afterhours drop off of unwanted animals. There are two chutes, one for cats and another for dogs. Many have claimed that it works like a garbage chute and the animals tumble down into a common pen where they are likely frightened and placed in jeopardy from their fellow inmates. While no one disputes that they are frightened and that it is not an ideal situation, the shelter notes that the chutes do not empty into common pens and that there are only three pens, each of which locks after receiving a deposit. Once they are in use, no further drop offs can be made and it is first come first serve. The idea of ...

A brand new Hollywood style pet jewelry company has been chosen to produce a special necklace for an upcoming horror film to be shot in 2014. Ruby’s Regalia opened for business in October 2013 and was immediately chosen by a film company in California to design and create a special dog necklace. The film will feature a large Rottweiler, who for once won’t be the bad guy. “We were very pleased that the dog wasn’t going to be shown in a bad light, because so many horror films have done so in the past. This time, the dog is a kind of hero in the film and we were delighted to be asked to create something unique.” Said Ruby’s Regalia spokesman, Brian Johnson. Although the film is top secret at the moment, much of it will be filmed in the UK with a few top stars already lined up for lead roles. Ruby’s Regalia has ...

Do Animals Get Drunk? Beware Of Your Pumpkins

monkey

While fall time in the US usually equates to Halloween and leaf peeping, in Darwin, Australia, it’s the start of Drunk Lorikeet Season. This drunken season coincides with the end of the dry season and the beginning of the wet season. And why is it called Drunk Lorikeet Season? Well, hundreds of these red-collared lorikeets will display all the signs of drunkenness, including falling over, struggling to fly, and running into things. And perhaps the most intriguing of all behaviors, this typically human-averse bird will lose its inhibitions and become oh-so-friendly with the folks down below. But why does this happen? While most experts believe there’s more to it than just drunkenness, some folks do actually think that the fermented fruits that are available in the fall cause the birds to get drunk. Truly drunk animals While the jury’s still out on why those lorikeets are about to get all crazy, there are plenty ...
