Pig Gets a Day in Court

Wilber is a one-and-a-half-year-old Vietnamese pot-bellied pig who was being evicted by a Houston Texas Home Owner Association (HOA) known as the Cypresswood Community Improvement Association.  Wilber lives with the Sardo family and they were informed in a letter on April 6, 2011 that their Association wanted Wilber removed from their home and threatened to file a lawsuit.  The reasoning behind the letter was that pot-bellied pigs are livestock and are not “common” or “traditional” pets and are therefore forbidden by Association rules. The case against Wilber came down to a clause in the Association’s by laws regarding ownership of pets as "domestic animals commonly and traditionally kept as household pets and shall not include any wild, semi-wild, or semi-domesticated animal." The Sardo family filed suit to declare that this particular pig breed is a “household pet” and should be able to remain in their home.  Our ancestors domesticated pigs to primarily ...

Pet Owners Unaware of Allergy Risks

According to the pet Allergy Worldwide Survey (PAWS) 44 percent of dog and cat owners were not aware of the symptoms that their pet could be suffering from seasonal allergies.  During the spring time, pollen and other allergens are everywhere and just like humans pets can suffer too.  The worldwide online survey was conducted in February and included responses from 1269 pet owners from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States. According to Dr Stephen Shaw, a specialist in veterinary dermatology, “it is important for pet owners to be able to recognize the most common signs of allergy symptoms of their dogs and cats including more frequent scratching, excessive licking of the same area, fur loss and rash.”  Other symptoms may include sneezing, redness, runny nose and eyes, dry flaky skin, ear infections, or scabby skin. It is important that pet owners realize that their dog or cat can develop allergies ...

Uproar Over Maryland’s Discrimination Against Pit Bulls

MARYLAND - The Maryland Court of Appeals has officially made an extremely misguided declaration that all pit bull-type dogs are inherently dangerous.  This horrible decision, handed down by Judge Dale R. Cathell, is already having a negative effect on these types of dogs in Maryland, as owners are being forced to abandon them for fear of being evicted from their places of residence. The Court of Appeals made this decision last week and it effects more than the dogs; anyone in custody of this type of dog including owners, landlords, veterinarians, kennels, animal shelters, and rescue groups are considered liable even if the dog does not pose a threat.  Reactive measures of this decision are: the number of strays of pit bull-type dogs will certainly increase in the state of Maryland people are being forced to either give up their dogs or move out of the state the number of pit bull-type dogs in ...

How to Select the Right Sized Bird Cage for a Pet Bird

Where a pet bird spends its time can have a huge impact on its well being.  Selecting the proper sized bird cage for the bird’s enjoyment and safety is the first step to keeping a happy and healthy bird. A general rule of thumb is that for large birds, the interior living space of the cage should be at least 1.5 times the bird’s adult wingspan – in depth, width and height.  So, if a Sun Conure’s wing span will be 11 inches, the cage should be at least 18 inches wide, high and deep.  Of course, more space is always better for the bird, as long as the bars of the cage are appropriately spaced to avoid injury. Some smaller birds benefit from a flight cage that will allow them to really move around.  Generally, having more space horizontally makes sense, as that allows more room for flight. For small birds such ...
