Disaster Heroes – The Animal Rescue Planners
Minneapolis, MN – Disasters like Hurricane Katrina, Japan’s recent recovery efforts and the earthquake that hit Haiti affect not only people but their pets as well. “Under a law passed by Congress after Hurricane Katrina, every state must have an animal disaster rescue plan in place. Without such a plan, the state would be ineligible to receive federal emergency disaster relief, said Charlie O'Brien, chairman of the Minnesota Animal Disaster Coalition, a group of about 25 government agencies, humane societies and other nonprofits. Not only does Minnesota have such a plan, but counties now are in the process of devising them, as well, he said.” Non-profit animal welfare rights groups and human societies are renowned for rushing to the aid of distressed animals caught in natural disaster areas. Today, plans are both critical and essential to performing rescue operations and to sheltered pets in the event of a disaster both nationally ...
Cat Survives 9 Days in a Tree, Through 2 Storms
Anderson, SC - It was a surprising and glorious day for a cat's owner when she discovered that her feline friend had survived nine full days stuck up in a tree. During these nine days, the cat, named Buster, miraculousy lived through two rain and thunderstorms, which could have been detrimental to not only the cat's health, but to his life as well. The 150-foot-tall loblolly pine in Anderson, South Carolina, became Buster's refuge after being scared by a neighbor and a barking dog. Buster’s owner, Linda Megretto, said, "I expected to find him dead on the ground Monday morning, it was his ninth day, and I figure he’d gone through his ninth life." Linda's husband, Andrew, climbed to the top of a 40-foot ladder and managed to coax the cat down. As it turns out, Buster got spooked when Megretto’s neighbor on Broadway Lake Road, rousted the cat out from under his shed with ...
Easter Pact: No Birds As Gifts
Charlestown, WA - Some have suggested that you can have chickens, ducks and geese as pets. Suzanne McMinn, of Roane County, has enjoyed raising chickens and ducks as pets and looks forward to the spring hatching season. This year after making a promise to not acquire any new additions to her “flock” she was given a box of goslings for her birthday. “I tried to be good this year. I really did! I made a pact with myself and everyone around me that there would be no new chickens or ducks this year. Then a box of goslings was given to me for my birthday. So it's not my fault, though I did forget to add "geese" to the no new chickens or ducks list.” “I've wanted geese for a long time, so I'm thrilled to have them,” said McMinn. “They are American Blue and American Lavender geese. This is a calm, ...
Dogs Have Their Very Own Easter Egg Hunt
Tinley Park, IL - April 16, 2011 marked the 4th Annual P.A.W.S. Easter Egg Hunt held at Tinley Park from 10:00am until 12:00pm, an event designed to raise funds for P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter. Even the cool, damp weather couldn't keep these dogs and their owners away from this annual event, as the park came alive with dogs dressed up in their Easter finest (or raincoats) to start the search for 3,000 plastic Easter eggs, each filled with a special dog treat. Each participant donated $10.00 per dog for this fun Easter event, each bringing a joy of the outdoors and finding treats of course! One Golden Retriever named Spring (how appropriate), was dressed in a red raincoat for this outdoor activity, while owner Lisa Hiller of Lockport walked her around for her chance at collecting the plastic eggs. Many others joined in the festivities, like Paula and Ed Kasper who drove up from ...
Dare-Devil Cat Rescued From Freeway Overpass
Imagine being out for a drive on the freeway and noticing a cat that looks like it's getting ready to either jump or fight off traffic. That's exactly what happened to the many drivers who called in to report the fragile situation, in the hopes that someone would come to the cat's rescue. The 1-year-old black feline was sitting on top of a concrete barrier that overlooks the 60 Freeway in Mira Loma, clearly trying as hard as possible to avoid the traffic speeding by. Animal Services Officer, Gary Pahls, quickly arrived on the scene to help the cat out of this dangerous situation. Upon arriving at the scene, Pahls immediately knew the rescue would be no small feat. "I saw this cat was up about 200 feet on the highest bridge and was up on the barrier, hanging off the edge trying to get away from traffic," said Pahls. "[She] was as far to the edge as possible to get away ...
