Allergy-Sniffing Dogs Can Save Childrens Lives

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates four out of every 100 children have a food allergy, and says rates are highest among preschool-age children.  From peanut allergies to other life-threatening allergens, it is becoming increasingly more popular to hear about allergy-sniffing dogs.  We've all heard of bomb-sniffing dogs and other medical service dogs, but allergy-sniffing dogs haven't always been given the proper credit. Meet Boo, a St. Bernard living with the Minicucci family of North Haven, CT.  Boo has been specially trained to sniff out peanut products and keep his owners away from them because of the daughter's severe allergies to them.  "The dog is just one way we can help our daughter have a more normal life," said Pam Minicucci of North Haven, whose 7-year-old daughter, Gianna, is constantly accompanied by her allergy-sniffing St. Bernard named Boo.  One of the most commendable things Boo has done for ...

Heartworm Prevention In Dogs More Important Than Ever

According to a State of Pet Health Report by Banfield Pet Hospital in Jackson, nearly seven percent of dogs in Mississippi will acquire heartworms this summer, the highest across the nation.  "In Mississippi if they are not on prevention they will most likely get heartworms disease," says Veterinarian Stacey Nauta with Dilworth Small Animal Hospital in Tupelo.  It is so important to make sure your dogs are receiving the proper preventative care when it comes to preventable diseases like heartworm disease. The reason the risk of heartworm disease is so high in Mississippi is the higher than normal number of mosquitos, which is where heartworms originate from.  What happens is a mosquito drinks blood from a heartworm infected dog and takes the worm with it.  The mosquito then lands on a dog that is not properly prevented for and basically injects the heartworm into the unsuspecting dog, and the cycle continues.  With the ...

Cat With Pellet in Head Rescued by Rock Climbers

Edmonton, Canada - This cat must have had a serious will to live considering all that she has gone through; being stuck at the top of a 59 foot tree for five days was just the beginning for her, as it was discovered when she was rescued that she had a pellet lodged in her head, although it is unknown who shot her or why.  As bizarre as this may sound, you can rest assured that the story does have a happy ending. The tiny cat was originally discovered by Kevin Medin of Aspen Gardens when he heard faint cat meows while he was in his backyard.  He followed the sounds until he came to the bottom of an evergreen tree and could see up at the top rested an obviously lost and scared cat.  Over the course of the next five days, Medin called a variety of places to enlist help ...

Avoid Dog Bites by Taking These Precautions

One of the worst feelings as a dog owner can be knowing that your precious pet has bitten someone, especially if it was serious and has caused major harm.  As the person who was bitten by a dog, it can be a traumatic event that depending on the seriousness of it, can lead to lifelong complications.  Although fatalities are rare, more than half a million people a year, mostly children, require hospital treatment for dog bites, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.  Just last year, it was reported that 30 people died from dog inflicted bites.  There are ways you can prevent a possible dog bite by simply watching for signs and knowing what to do if you see them. "It's very important for parents to teach children how to behave around dogs without frightening them," says Dr. Pamela Reid, vice president of the Animal Behavior Center for the American ...

Pet Rats Hit New York Social Scene

New York City - New York City is known to be home to many wild rats and in fact ridding the city of wild rats is a top priority. However, over this past weekend New Yorkers were treated to a fashion show held as part of the New York City Fancy Rat Convention that was organized by the Big Apple Rattery, which provided all the rat models. That’s right, domesticated pet rats are fast becoming a hot item in the pet world and they had a chance to show-off some amazing outfits on the ratwalk like bridal dresses and tuxedos. Rat owner Kelly Antonova, 27, said: “Rats have amazing personalities. They are like a dog, cat and ferret all rolled into one. But each also has its own individual character. I've had rats who swim in a little bath, or sleep on the bed. You can train them on a little ...

Steps to Take to Help Your Pets Lose Weight

According to the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Study conducted in 2010 by The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), the rate of obese pets (those at least 30 percent more than their normal body weight) continues to steadily increase. This study found 22 percent of cats and 20 percent of dogs to be obese.  Widening the classification to "overweight or obese" drives these rates to 53 percent for cats and 55 percent for dogs.  As pet owners, we want to do everything we can to help our furry friends lose that weight and lead healthier lives.  Just as obesity has severe health effects on humans, dogs and cats can suffer from ailments such as joint, respiratory and cardiovascular problems, diabetes, pancreatitis, as well as skin issues. According to Dr. April Miles, DVM, there are steps you can take to get your pets on the right track to losing the appropriate amount of ...

New Treatment for Arthritic Dogs; Stem Cell Therapy

Stem Cell Therapy has been used for years in the arthritic treatment of horses, as it is known to greatly help in the lessening of joint pain that is so common.  More and more veterinarians are starting to use stem cell therapy in the treatment of arthritis in dogs, as it is believed that the stem cells can increase the dogs ability to decrease inflammation while helping the injured tissues to regenerate.  "This is an attempt to turn back the time but without drugs," said Brian Maxwell, a veterinarian whose specialty is orthopedic surgery at Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos, California. Ed Tani of Hayward, California and his dog Cookie provide a perfect example of how stem cell therapy can work to relieve arthritis pain.  Cookie is a 13 1/2-year-old Australian shepherd mix who has become increasingly ridden with the pain of arthritis.  She has trouble laying down and getting up, ...

Protecting Your Outdoor Pets From Coyotes

4

Tampa, FL – Coyotes have been spotted throughout Florida and are unlikely to be leaving anytime soon. They migrated to the South over 40 years ago and can now be found along with alligators and other native species. While this poses little danger to humans, it can be serious problem for their pets. “Though there have been no reports of coyotes attacking people in Florida, pets haven't fared as well. Pinellas County has received numerous reports of pet cats likely killed by coyotes or pet dogs snatched by the predators,” said Greg Andrews, operations manager for Pinellas County Animal Services." “When a yard is overgrown, what you tend to get is a lot more rodents, or birds or lizards, so the coyotes know it's a good area to feed," Andrews said. On average there is about a sighting a day reported in Pinellas County since they started keeping records in 2009. Most ...
