Biggest Birthing Batch of Hamsters at Toronto Animal Shelter

The Toronto Animal Shelter has seen their share of odd and surprising births during the course of their existence, but the recent birthing of 26 hamsters to three mothers during one birth process has the staff searching for help from others to adopt these newborns.  Animal lovers as far away as California have come forward to relieve the animal shelter from the duty of caring for all 26 hamsters, due to their lack of space to keep them all.  Currently there is an overflow of rabbits and guinea pigs in its small animal section, making for a tight squeeze with all 26 newborn hamsters. In addition to those who came forward from California, shelter workers, pet stores, and other volunteers have stepped up to claim some of the hamsters.  Some of them are still too little and "new born" to be released from the Toronto Animal Shelter, but they are providing ...

Is It Allergies or a Common Eye Problem In Your Dog?

So many dogs will show signs of having an issue with their eyes at some point in their lives, but there are certain dog breeds that are more prone to common eye problems.  During the spring and summer months, it can be difficult to determine if your furry friend is having an allergic reaction to the scents and debris in the air or if he has one of the many eye problems that are common to dogs.  No matter what kind of eye problem you think your dog may have, it is recommended that you visit your veterinarian right away so they can determine exactly what's going on. If your dog is experiencing allergies, typically their eyes will exhibit signs of redness, puffiness, and watering.  These same symptoms could even be a sign that your dog has injured his eye in some way, so the symptoms are never clear to the pet owner ...

What Do The Homeless Do With Their Pets?

Riverside, CA - When a homeless person enters a shelter many cannot bring their pets with them. Experts say that homeless shelters that have a kennel are rare. The Homeless are very attached to their pets.  In Riverside, homeless outreach specialist Roman Aguilar said “the people he encounters on the job take good care of their animal companions and will forgo their own meals to feed a pet.” Fortunately in Riverside, as of Thursday, a kennel at the homeless shelter now exists. There are very few facilities in the country that offer the Homeless the ability to bring their pets along. The emergency shelter in Riverside on Hulen Place is part of a much larger facility that includes a 400-square-foot kennel that houses 18 cages for dogs and cats. The kennel was built with federal grant money, donated labor and materials at a cost of less than $50,000. The Kennel is ...

Toilet Training Your Cat – The Pros and Cons

While it may seem like a dream come true to have your cat use the bathroom toilet instead of a messy litter box, there are many things that go in to the proper training.  In addition to the training, there are a variety of pros and cons to being a pet owner of a cat who uses the toilet.  The most obvious reason to want to teach your cat to use the toilet instead of a litter box is the now clean area where the litter box once sat.  If you only have one toilet in your home, that could be a reason why you would want your kitty to have it's own place to relieve himself, instead of your toilet. The Exotic Pet Lifestyle – Think Twice

East Texas - Most family pets are fine living in the house and being a part of the household. However, some pets can kill you if not handled properly. Though the number of people killed by exotic pets is small, around five people died last year, it still underscores the problem of trying to domesticate wild animals. It doesn’t matter if the animal is a tiger, deer or lion they are still dangerous in captivity for those who really don’t know how to handle them. Just last year, a man in East Texas was killed by a red stag deer that he had fed for years.  “The enclosure was so small he didn't have any room for retreat and he couldn't get out of the way of it when it became aggressive," says Smith County Game Warden Chris Green. Georgia Tornadoes Bonded 2 Homeless Puppies

Two puppies who have never seen each other before have become the best of friends, all due to the tornadoes in Georgia leaving them homeless and family-less.  Shortly after the tornadoes struck, the puppies found each other wandering a debris filled street and have stuck by each other's sides ever since.  These two puppies, Sebastian and Sabien, were rescued from the scene of destruction by the HAND Foundation, an organization that transports animals from shelters where they might be euthanized to places where they have a better chance of being adopted.  These two puppies, along with 24 other homeless dogs, were taken to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Fl. on Tuesday of this week. The deadly storms and tornadoes that ripped through Georgia on April 27th and 28th have killed more than a dozen people, and prompted Governor Nathan Deal to declare a state of emergency for 16 counties in the state.  In addition ...
