dog ate pennies

A 13 year old Jack Russell Terrier, named Jack, gave his owner, Tim Kelleher, a scare recently. When trying to reach a bag of bagels, he managed to knock over both bagels and a bag of change. While licking up the crumbs he also managed to ingest $1.11 in pennies. The zinc in coins can be potentially lethal and Jack began vomiting a short while later. He was rushed to a Manhattan veterinarian where he received over two hours of emergency surgery to remove the coins. It is important to keep a close eye on dogs. Many are more than willing to make less than healthy dietary choices. Jack and the dogs listed below got lucky and all made a full recovery but their adventure could have easily ended badly. Below are some of the most unique things dogs have eaten. In an attempt to prevent another dog from getting a rubber ...

Alley Cat Rescue Hosts Free Feral Cat Spay Day

Mt. Rainier, MD— On April 27, 2012, Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) will be hosting its Fourth Annual Free Feral Cat Spay Day to encourage the veterinary community and the public to end cat homelessness and to decrease shelters’ euthanasia rates by practicing trap-neuter-return (TNR). TNR is the humane management of feral cat colonies or community cats, where cats are caught in humane traps, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned to the site. Friendly kittens and cats who can be socialized are placed into adoption programs to find homes (an immediate reduction in cat populations) while those who are truly “feral” are returned to their outdoor homes. A feral cat is simply a domestic cat who was born outside and has never lived with humans, or one who was a housecat, became lost, and went without human contact, becoming unsocialized to humans. Feral cats easily revert back to living on instincts and become ...

Proper Dog Park Etiquette for You and Your Dog

dog park

For those of us in the know – dog parks can be a fantastic place to spend some time with your dog. For those of you who haven’t experienced it yet – if you want your dog to get much-needed exercise and good socializing skills, then there are fewer places better than your local dog park. However, before you jump in your car with Fido and head down to the park, there are some rules of etiquette you want to follow to make sure you and your pet aren’t run out of town with pitchforks. Give your dog a trial run first If you don’t know how your dog reacts in social settings among dogs and other people, it’s strongly suggested that you do a trial run first. A trial run will include driving down to your dog park, and letting your dog sniff around outside the park. This will help your dog ...

Seals on Board!

seals

Ethan Janson is a 41 year old sports-photographer-turned-dentist, Seattle native that lives near the Puget Sound in Washington state. He had noticed that the local seals enjoyed sunning themselves on his neighbours’ boats during the summer months. When the boats departed in the winter, the seals had nowhere to soak up some rays. This led him to tether his surfboard to a marine buoy for the month of October. He attached a waterproof GPro camera to the board and recorded each day’s activity. The result is 3 minutes and 44 seconds of toil and triumph by a bunch of baby seals that take cuteness to a new level.  Newly weaned from their mother, several harbor seal pups between the ages of six weeks and three months do their best to conquer the board. The video is now up on YouTube and has almost a million and a half views since it ...

Food recalls can be a scary ordeal, especially if a contagious disease involved. Fortunately, the reason for this recall wasn’t as serious as Salmonella. The company is offering refunds for certain bags of its “Premium Edge” adult cat food and “Diamond Naturals” kitten food because they may not contain enough of a certain vitamin. “Tests conducted by the company indicated the products might have a low level of thiamine (Vitamin ...

A Look Into Apes at US Zoos

apes

The world is going ape! Though many of the great apes are endangered in the wild, they have been having a bit of a baby boom in United States Zoos. Sadly, while many primates breed well in captivity some have rejected their new offspring for reasons unknown. Thankfully, dedicated zoo staff have stepped in and are caring for the new apes that would have died in the wild. Nayembi, a three month old gorilla at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo was attacked by another ape in her family group and required reconstructive surgery for facial injuries. She is now in stable condition but will require further medical treatment. It is not known what provoked the attack. At the Atlanta Zoo, zookeepers had to step in when Sandar, a Sumatran orangutan, was rejected by his mother with a few days of his birth. Orangutans cling to their mothers from the beginning and are constantly ...

For Those Who Have Cat Allergies, Is Relief Coming?

cat allergies

For the eight to ten percent of the population that have cat allergies, relief may be on the way. The second phase of clinical trials for a new vaccine is complete and the results are very promising. The third phase has begun. If successful, the new vaccine could be on the market within two years. In just four doses over a twelve week period it can provide relief for as long as two years. Cat allergies are on the most common types of allergies. When cats groom themselves, they release an allergenic protein into the air and onto their fur. For many people, exposure to this allergen results in sneezing, watery, itchy eyes, and other misery. Up until now treatment has been to avoid the allergen altogether or take allergy shots. The latter can be expensive and they need to be taken frequently over a period of years to be effective. ...

Ontario Pit Bull Ban a Challenge for MLB Pitcher

pit bull ban

Canadians are known for being kind and accepting people, but it seems they don’t extend this civility to dogs. Ontario has a province-wide ban on pit bulls and dogs who fall within the lineage of the pit bull, which is why newly acquired Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Mark Buehrle suddenly finds himself separated from his family. Buehrle owns four dogs, one of which (Slater) is a bulldog and American Staffordshire Terrier mix (the latter being of the pit bull lineage). When Buehrle was traded from the Florida Marlins to Toronto, the family had a decision to make - either live in the states (like Buffalo) and commute to Toronto, or leave Slater with friends. Instead, Buehrle’s wife and two children will live away from him during the baseball season, so that they can care for Slater. Ontario’s pit bull ban was passed in 2005, banning the breeding, sale, and ownership of pit bulls, ...

The Iditarod: A Brief History, Fun Facts, and the 2013 Winner!

1
iditarod

It’s that time of year again. One of the most gruelling races on Earth has begun. Over a thousand miles of Alaskan trail stretching from Anchorage to Nome, all of it to be covered by a musher and his dog team. Yes, it’s Iditarod time! The Iditarod began its current route in 1973. Sled dogs, mushers, and traditional trails used were disappearing as the snowmobile altered transport in the north forever. Joe Redington Sr., Tom Johnson, and Gleo Hyuck along with a team of volunteers ran the first ever Iditarod. It was meant to reconstruct the freight route that ran from Anchorage to Nome. The winner that year was Dick Wilmarth. It took him three weeks to complete the race. Joe Redington Sr. would never win his race but he competed nineteen times, the last time in 1997 at the age of eighty, two years before he died of cancer. He ...

Are Green Cleaning Products Dangerous for your Pets?

1
green cleaning products

Green cleaning products and homemade cleaners continue to grow in popularity, and as the season of spring cleaning approaches, many of these products will start flying off the shelves, and filling up our houses. Green cleaning product users will revel in the idea that they are keeping their home and family safe from harmful toxins. But just because a product is “green” to us humans, doesn’t mean that it’s green to our pets. Natural doesn’t mean pet healthy We as humans know that not everything that grows on trees (or from the ground) is safe to eat. And just because something’s safe for us, doesn’t mean it’s safe for our animals (just think of grapes/raisins and chocolate). Natural cleansers such as oranges, lemons and peppermints are common in cleaning products, particularly green products. They not only prove effective in cleaning, but they provide a fresh scent. However, cats can suffer from stomach aches from ...
