Elwood, IL - Anyone who can answer yes to the question, "do you and your dog have matching outfits?" will be excited to learn about an event where you are not only expected to look like your dog, but where you can win prizes for a dog and owner matching costume contest and a dog costume contest!  The event is called 'Struttin for Strays' and will be held at the Lloyd Erickson Park in Elwood on May 15th.  Sponsored by the Will County Humane Society, this event is a fundraiser for the many programs and services they offer, and will feature lots of fun, food, and activities for the everyone. Tornadoes ripped through parts of the South leaving residences and pets stranded in one of the worst disasters caused by tornadoes in years. All Animal Control facilities are acting as animal shelters during this State of Emergency for pet owners who wish to keep their pets, however clean-up from the storms has caused the already overburdened shelters to reach a state of crises. Space to shelter animals in many areas especially rural communities has always been short in supply but with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed many animals that were separated from their owners now roam the streets and fend for themselves. Norco, CA – Pets can now be saved during fire emergencies with a life saving oxygen mask. These masks are specifically designed for pets. While you might think that an oxygen mask built for human would work, it won’t.  “While it has been successful only in isolated examples, masks normally used for providing oxygen to humans are not effective for treating animals,” according to Norco fire engineer-paramedic Grant Juncker. Norco Battalion Chief Frank deBoer said that, “there are about six pets per year that require assistance due to fires in his district. In just the last few months, we have lost two dogs due to smoke asphyxiation from structure fires," he said. It is always a scary thought to know that as a loving dog owner, you may have mistakenly given your pet something that turns out to be harmful to them.  Hopefully that's not the case here, but in order to prevent any further effects, this announcement of a dog treat recall is being made.  The product being recalled is Pig Ears for Pet Treats, announced by Keys Manufacturing Company of Paris, Illinois.  The announcement of the recall is due to a Missouri dog handler reporting an illness that is believed to be linked to this product.  The probable contaminant in these dog treats is Salmonella. Can how we refer to our pets have negative implications? Should our “pets” be called “animal companions” to better clarify just what they are to their owners? Do shifts in our vocabulary have any correlation to the way we treat animals? According the new Journal on Animal Ethics they do. "We do need to examine our language about animals because a lot of it is derogatory in the sense that it belittles them and our relations with them," journal co-editor Andrew Linzey said. The publication questions derogatory terms like beasts, critters and wild animals as well as phrases like “drunk as a skunk” and “eat like a pig”.
