Dog Owners Will Now Face Fines if no Dog License

It is estimated that less than five percent of dog owners actually purchase a license for their dog, which is meant to be a way of identifying you as its owner.  If your dog is injured, the license may help others notify you quickly, possibly saving your dogs life.  If an Animal Control Officer rescues your lost dog, the license may be the answer to returning the dog directly to you, therefore saving both you and your dog a trip to the Shelter. If you are a Chicago dog owner who does not have a license for your dog, you will soon face fines starting at $50 and ranging up to $200.  In an effort to raise awareness of the reasons a dog license is required as well as an attempt to license as many dogs as possible, the City Clerk, Susana Mendoza, and the city’s Commission on Animal Care and Control will sponsor a ...

Tips and Tricks to Train Older Dogs

Most people think that dogs that no longer fall into the puppy category are set in their ways and are past the point of learning new things.  That is simply not true if you take the proper steps to teach them and are armed with patience.  Even the oldest of dogs are able to be trained to do something they've never done before, it's just a matter of how you, the pet owner, goes about teaching them. One of the first things you'll want to keep in mind when training older dogs is that the training needs to be done in a gentle way, while maintaining an authoritative leadership.  Also remember that it may take longer to train an older dog than a puppy, as you may need to start with helping them to unlearn some of the habits they are used to.  As with puppy training, use healthy treats as ...

Why Exotic Pet Laws Should be Strengthened

While it can be interesting and exciting to want to own an exotic pet such as a lion or wolf, the dangers of doing so far out way any reward.  Following a recent event in Ohio where exotic animals were released into the wild after being kept on private property, animal rights groups are stepping forward requesting that laws on keeping exotic animals as pets be strengthened. One such animal rights group is targeting Virginia where they say has some of the nation's weakest exotic animal laws.  "Virginia has little oversight of exotic animal ownership; the law requires a permit for big cats, bears and wolves with no regulation at all for primates," the Humane Society said in a news release.  The need to tighten regulations on the possession and sale of wild animals has grown, and now people are speaking up. There are a few reasons why it is not in the ...

Seniors Helping Senior Pets On “Make A Difference Day”

Most of the time when someone decides to adopt a pet from a shelter, Humane Society, pet store, or pet adoption clinic, the first thing that comes to mind is which puppy or kitten will I go home with.  But what about the dogs and cats that have reached that senior status, having already gone through many years of life and are already trained or set in their ways?  These senior pets are most likely not chosen for adoption and remain in the hands of the shelter. Thankfully, there are people out there who decided to make it their mission to help these senior pets get adopted and bring awareness to the public about just how great a companion a senior dog or cat can be.  Judi Leonard of Milpitas, California, a 56 year old senior herself, is one of those individuals.  A lifelong animal lover and owner of an adopted cat, Leonard was inspired last year when reading ...

Cat Responsible For Owner Learning Her Breast Cancer Spread

Richland, WA - In recognition of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it seems appropriate to find out that a cat named Stretchie was responsible for alerting his owner that all was not well.  If it weren't for the cat, Joyce Fitzgerald, Richland, Washington resident, may not have learned that her breast cancer had spread into her right breast. What started as a normal day of Stretchie trying to give Fitzgerald a little love and affection turned out to be a painful realization that her breast cancer had spread.  Fitzgerald was diagnosed with cancer in her left breast in March 2001 and was preparing to go through the necessary steps to get rid of it.  Just a week after her diagnosis, Stretchie jumped up onto Fitzgerald's right breast, causing her to rub it, finding a lump that wasn't there just a week prior. The very next day she went to see her doctor where it ...

Pets Able to Get Vaccines at Walgreens

The idea to provide pet vaccines, like rabies shots, at local pharmacies like Walgreens and pet stores came from the convenience of humans being able to get a flu shot at another location besides your doctor's office.  Certain locations in South Florida are happy to let mobile animal care clinics run by the Pet Stop provide the convenience of getting your pets vaccinated. The Pet Stop was founded in Miami about a year ago by Tina Zambrana, with the intention of making it convenient for pet owners to get their flu shot and their pets vaccinated at the same time.  Convenience is the major factor here.  "We make it clear we are not here to replace the customer's primary veterinarian.  It's like going to Walgreens for your flu shot," Zambrana said.  "It's just easier than having to go to the doctor's office and wait." Choosing to have your pets vaccinated at one of the mobile ...
