Spoil your dog with this tasty treat that you can make at home for mere pennies compared to purchasing a comparable treat from a specialty pet shop.  I came across this frozen treat recipe for dogs in The Morning Call newspaper.  It was submitted by a local reader named Joan Stangl-McGaughey from Bethlehem, Pa. "I was looking online to find some Frosty Paws coupons the beginning of summer and came across a recipe for them stead," said Joan.  "It is super easy, inexpensive and my dog, Isaac, loves them." Ingredients: 1 ripe banana 32-ounce container of plain or vanilla yogurt 2 Tbsp. creamy peanut butter 2 Tbsp. honey Directions: In a large mixing bowl, mash the banana, then mix in the remaining ingredients.  The mixture will fill 12, five-ounce paper cups about three-fourths full. Teachers Receive Help Getting Pets in the Classroom

Many teachers believe that real animals in the classroom can enrich a child’s educational experience. Experts agree that many students that enter the first grade can play a video game but very few have a pet to play with. The only problem is the cost involved is usually shouldered by the teacher. Educators like Dawn Slinger of Framingham, Minnesota, believe in having animals in the classroom and have paid for them out of her own pocket for over 25 years. Slinger believes it is worth cost for the benefits to her students. Parents tell her their children are inspired by the animals and are excited about learning, she said. The kind of pets to include in the classroom and curriculum ultimately rests with the teacher. Slinger chooses her pets based on how fascinated the children are with the pet and if the pets are even tempered. Also, she makes sure they won’t ...

How to Create a Pet Friendly Home

Having a home that is both pet and people friendly may seem like a challenge, but with a little knowledge and the right items in place, you can create a comfortable, visually appealing, and easier-to-clean home. The first thing to keep in mind is that creating a safe home for your pets is actually very similar to child-proofing.  For example, you wouldn't display a family heirloom like a standing lamp in the most active room of your home if you have little ones for the same reason you shouldn't if you have pets. That being said, here's a few tips for creating a pet friendly home: Opt for hardwood or laminate instead of wall-to-wall carpeting Carpet is difficult to keep clean because it acts like a magnet for pet hair and dander, allergens, and the "accident" your pets may have from time to time.  While the surface appears clean, not even the best vacuum ...

Dog Escapes Alligator Attack in Florida

0

Orlando, FL - What started as a normal day for Steve Gustafson and his dog Bounce ended in a day Steve will never ever forget.  The normal day found Steve trimming an oak tree in the backyard of his home in The Villages retirement community northwest of Orlando Florida when he heard his terrier cry out.  What he saw when he turned around was an image straight out of a movie. There just feet away from him was a 7-foot alligator literally pulling Bounce into the pond by her shoulder and collar.  Since Bounce is only a 13 pound West Highland Terrier, you can imagine how that looked. Gustafson told the Orlando Sentinal, "For whatever reason, I don’t know, I just yelled, ‘you’re not going to get her!’ and just leaped on the gator…just like you do some silly belly flop in a pool."  "The only difference was I landed on top ...

More Veterinarians Making House Calls

The number of veterinarians who make house calls is growing substantially and this trend will only gain popularity as the benefits are more widely known.  While it is more common in larger cities and higher income areas, house calls can make a difference in the overall health and well being of your pet. Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a professor at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists said the trend is a return to tradition.  "We used to call them farm calls."  "While the vet was taking care of cows and horses and other livestock, he would take care of the family dogs and cats too." Veterinarians say that while a house call costs a lot more money than a typical visit to the office, it is worth it in many ways.  One of the benefits of making house calls is that seeing an ...

Non-Profit Takes “Dogged” Approach to Job Training for Youth With Disabilities

Austin, TX - Even in times of low unemployment, persons with disabilities are among those least likely to be hired, often for the lack of social and job skills. That’s why, on September 20, the non-profit Austin Dog Alliance will begin offering classes for youth aged 15-19 with disabilities that focus on preparing for employment and exploring dog-related employment options. K9 Club Careers with Dogs will be eligible for funding by the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) for DARS participants who are lacking the social skills needed to find employment. The classes also will be available to the public. According the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a person with a disability is almost twice as likely to be unemployed as a person with no disability. The Alliance is trying to improve those odds by capitalizing on many youths’ love of animals. “Job training for young people with disabilities is ...
