14 cases of the bacterial infection, salmonella, have been found in humans in nine states which have been linked to contaminated pet food. This has prompted the Food and Drug Administration to expand its initial recall of Diamond Pet Food products manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012, from the company’s plant in Gaston, SC.

On May 4, 2012, Diamond Pet Foods expanded its own recall to include Puerto Rico, parts of Canada and 21 states in the US including: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. The FDA also warns that additional States may be affected due to sales by pet food vendors.

“We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., and facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets,” said Diamond Pet Foods.

The pet food brands affected by the recall are specifically for lots of dry dog food and cat food:

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that not only affects humans but pets as well. Pets that are infected can also spread the disease to others. The symptoms include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and decreased appetite. If you think you have a bag of contaminated pet food you should stop feeding it to your pet and contact the place of purchase for a refund.
